Although identity and identical have identical roots words, do not refer to the same meaning.

Identity refers to one, to self, while identical refers to two, to other, top air, it always indicates the presence of others. And basically what is in ruins in our world today is the self and our relationship with pair, identical or other one.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the complete establishment of globalization and the decreed end of history, the world that seemed to promise freedom and prosperity without end has turned out to be a world of multiple economic, political, war and environmental crises that they have defeated the faith we had in progress and in science as the last savior. Except for some artistic creation’s dystopias, for example, literary, “1984” by Georges Orwell from 1949 that anticipated the great vigilant brother and the set of loneliness, or the 1932’s novel, “A Happy World” by Aldous Huxley, and “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury published in 1953 and cinematographic works, such as “Blade Runner 1982”, among others, from power happiness was sold, it was believed, after the 20th century’s fear, by the increasing production, human consumption and science we would always go forward, to best. Another crisis kind refers to the construction of individual and social identity, ideologies, beliefs, traditions, what means, referents, are weakened. People has nowhere to hold on. The noisy emptiness supplies them. Digital tecnology advancement and web world, divided and exposed self, it breaks up into the vast information amount, public exposure and is continuously monitored, voluntarily or involuntarily.

After these words, it is not strange that the definition of identity concern a central place in art and in particular in this exhibition members. Maybe because our identity as individuals and as a collective self is in query, uncertain, split. What is characteristic of this era is schizophrenia. It is no coincidence that these concerns happen in a world whose basic definition schemes have been broken. Where there are no sureness but an extraordinary and uncontrollable volume of information or products, how can we find ourselves in this chaos? Our individual identity crisis is a global crisis since we live in a mixed world, accelerated by constant presence and constant absence, of loneliness and accompaniment, continuous deafening noise. Impressed by competitiveness, haste, uncertainty, we fragmented ourselves, we disguised ourselves, we searched for ourselves incessantly.

How do I know it’s a memory and not an appendage? Blad Runner 2049 protagonist asks himself. Is it mine? What is mine? Is it me? Guarded and exposed, demanded and doubted.

We question ourselves before the devastating time, an instrument that divides our lives, orders and governs in a repetition continuum without leisure spaces free of consumption, infected by haste, not having time.

What can we do to rebuild the ruins? Do we have a special responsibility as artists?
