Charo Corrales
Artist
biography
Charo Corrales works photography as a means of expression, but as a multimedia artist she also uses for her creations: video, performance, textiles, ceramic, installation and the intervention of spaces.
Born in 1968 in Olvera (Cádiz), she graduated in Audiovisual Media from the University of Westminster (London) in 1997, and also did a master’s degree in Design and Media from the same university. She fulfilled another Master on Exhibition Spaces and Creative Museography at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and has since gone on countless studies in the most varied themes related to the audiovisual art world.
Corrales alternates her personal photographic projects, both inside and outside of Spain, with the assistance of other prominent photographers and with teaching photography and, since 2012, directs and coordinates the cultural space “A pie de calle”.
To date, the central axis of her work is personal or collective identity in aspects as varied as body, age, group membership, emigration, immigration and femininity.
As a photographer, she exhaustively explores self-portraiture as a means of expression, making the snapshots of her body, with all its scars – those that can be seen and those that can not be seen – a beautiful metaphor of life.
Her photos deepen, as if it were a matrioshka or Russian doll, in multiple stories, telling stories that any woman can identify with when she looks at herself in the mirror of time, naked and without makeup, with its lights and shadows; Sometimes, vulnerable and others, strong.
